NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Over the course of 72 hours, two teams representing NU upset two nationally ranked teams in two different sports. The Purple Eagles upset No. 14 Florida State 3-1 on the diamond, and the Purple Eagles upset No. 20 Sacred Heart 6-1 on the ice.
In a Valentine’s Day victory, the Purple Eagles beat No. 14 Florida State 3-1. Going into the top of the ninth, the Purple Eagles were trailing 1-0. With two outs they loaded the bases. Thanks to walks by 1B Peter Battaglia and DH Josh Marchese, the Purple Eagles took a 2-1 lead. RF Spencer Marcus’ RBI single gave the Purple Eagles a 3-1 lead before the Seminoles got the third out of the inning. Two strikeouts by RP Alex MacKinnon sealed the season-opening win for the Purple Eagles.
On Feb. 16 the Purple Eagles beat No. 20 Sacred Heart 6-1. Purple Eagles forward Dylan Mills scored two goals. Fellow forwards Eric Cooley, Nic Mucci, and Jon Hill all scored. Jared Brandt was the lone defenseman to score for NU. Jack Billings, Ben Sokay, and Cam Cook each had two assists in the rout. Chad Veltri had 31 saves in net for the Purple Eagles. Not only did they upset a nationally ranked opponent, but they secured a win over an Atlantic Hockey Association foe.
The wins by Purple Eagles on the diamond and on the ice come on top of the Men’s Basketball team posting a 69-66 win in the latest Battle of the Bridge on Feb. 12. Needless to say, it’s been a great time to be a Purple Eagle.
