The Semesters: Spring 2019

By: Niagara Wire Sports Staff

The Semester Awards, or The Semesters for short, are the Niagara Wire Sports Staff’s biannual awards given to the best NU players, coaches, and teams of the proceeding semester. Here are The Semesters for the Spring 2019 semester:

Team of the Semester: Hockey

The Hockey team galvanized the NU campus with their deep run in the 2019 Atlantic Hockey Tournament, capped off by an appearance in the Atlantic Hockey Championship. The team was led by F Ludwig Stenlund, D Noah Delmas, and G Brian Wilson – all of which are projected to be back in Purple and White for the Purple Eagles next season.

Player of the Semester: Rachel MacChenyne, Women’s Lacrosse

MacCheyne went on a warpath this season. MacCheyne broke the all-time MAAC goal scoring record when she netted her 187thgoal of her illustrious career. MacCheyne also broke the NU single season goals record, which she previously held, scoring 62 goals this season. MacCheyne also broke the record for most points (203).

Rookie of the Semester: Ludwig Stenlund, Hockey

Stenlund tore it up for the Purple Eagles on a local level and on a national level this season. He led the Purple Eagles in goals (24) and points (42). Stenlund scored the most goals out of every freshman in the entire country. Stenlund was also named Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of the Year.

Coach of the Semester: Jason Lammers, Hockey

Over the course of his two seasons at NU, Lammers has built a winning culture that was most evident in this season’s outcome. On the sidelines, and as seen on Uncommon, he has gotten his players to buy into his vision, to truly care about one another and most of all, to win hockey games.
