The Rutgers University Scarlet Knights were too much for the Niagara University Purple Eagles to handle in Tuesday night’s MAAC lacrosse matchup, starting the game with five unanswered goals en route to an 18-8 victory.
Despite the Purple Eagles’ best efforts, seven unanswered goals by the Scarlet Knights was too big a mountain to climb and Rutgers left with the victory. Head Coach Wendy Stone commended Niagara’s performance.
“We’re really proud of the effort the team put forth today against a good, experienced team,” said Stone. “We battled today, and playing teams like this will make us better in the long run.”
Niagara managed to pull within three of the Scarlet Knights towards the end of the first half, but the aforementioned seven unanswered from Rutgers proved to be the difference maker. Rachel MacCheyne led the Purple Eagles, scoring two goals with an assist.
Niagara returns home to play the Fairfield University Stags on Saturday at noon at Niagara Field.
