Women’s basketball’s season ends in dramatic fashion, fall to Canisius for third time this season

Griffins pull away late in overtime to defeat the Purple Eagles, 80-74

The Niagara University women’s basketball team was defeated in dramatic fashion versus their rival Canisius College in the first round of the MAAC tournament by a final score of 80-74. This is the second year in a row that the Purple Eagles faced off against their rival, in the first round of the tournament defeating their rival last season by a close margin of 65-64.

This year it was a different result. Niagara controlled the game throughout most of the first half with four different players all putting up six points. At the end of the half, Canisius was able to to take the lead and held it up until late in the game. After taking a 3-point lead, Canisius was not able to stop Niagara from tying the game with a 3-pointer by senior Tiffany Corselli. Corselli had a team-high 19 points.

Unfortunately for the Purple Eagles they were not able to keep up with the Griffs as they were outscored 11-5 in the overtime period. Redshirt-junior Victoria Rampado led the leading attack in the period scoring all of Niagara’s points. She finished with 14 along with eight rebounds and three steals. Canisius was led by Maria Welch and Lauren D’Hont as the pair put up 25 and 20 points respectively.

Canisius goes on to play Quinnipiac University in the second-round of the tournament tomorrow, March 3 at 1:00 p.m.
