Purple Eagles finish regular season on road, prepare for tournament

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY N.Y., – The Purple Eagles women’s basketball team finished their regular season this past weekend as they traveled on the road in contests against Rider and Monmouth.
On Feb. 24 the Purple Eagles started the weekend battling the Rider Stags. Down early in the second quarter, Niagara was able to gain a one-point lead, 17-16, thanks to an 8-3 run contributed by Victoria Rampado and Kaylee Stroemple. Rider would answer back with a 16-0 run of their own to close out the first half. From there, the game was in the Stags hands, as they would defeat Niagara 62-41. Rampado led the Purple Eagles with 12 points and six rebounds, while Stroemple finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
On Feb. 26, Niagara finished their regular season with a matchup against the Monmouth Hawks. The Purple Eagles were down 11 at halftime but started to make some plays in the third quarter as Rampado would score 12 to keep Niagara within eight points heading into the final quarter. Tiffany Corselli would start the final ten minutes with a three-pointer to bring Niagara within five, but the Hawks finished the game strong, winning by a final score of 68-62. Rampado tied her career-high with 27 points, while Stroemple finished with 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Niagara (8-21, 5-15 MAAC) will head into the MAAC Championship as the nine seed this weekend, as they face the eight seed Canisius in another “Battle of the Bridge” matchup. The game will take place at the Times Union Center in Albany with tipoff scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
